Did you know?

Many people consider German a difficult language to learn because of its lengthy words, tough pronunciation and the 3 grammatical genders. However, German is easier to master if you already know any Germanic language. For example, English and German share around 60% of their vocabulary. So, if you know some level of English you already have a great start and will be familiar with over half of the German words.

Another piece of good news is that the German grammar and the forming of words is considered to be extremely logical with only a few exceptions. Nouns usually combine with the activity to which it is related to in order to create a word. For example, a vacuum cleaner is called a “der Staubsauger” and it’s made out of the verb “saugen” meaning “to suck” and the noun “Staub” which means “dust”. The same rule applies to lots of words such as “Fernsehen” which means “television” composed of the verb “sehen” meaning “to watch” and the noun “Fern” meaning “far”. Putting them together would refer to a device that you watch from a certain distance.

Learning German can also have unexpected benefits in case you ever want to learn Dutch spoken in the Netherlands, Afrikaans spoken in South Africa or Luxembourgish from Luxembourg. All of these languages are West Germanic and have multiple similarities to German. The German language also has similarities in terms of grammar, vocabulary and syntax to Nordic languages which are North Germanic languages: Swedish, Norwegian and Danish. Obviously, it’s easier for you to learn German if you know any of the Germanic languages.
